Josh Evans was raised in Irvington, New Jersey. He attended Irvington High School and was a member of the football and track teams.

In football, Josh Evans ended his career with 1,403 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns, and completed 123 of 190 pass attempts totaling 1,856 yards and 18 touchdowns. Additionally, he switched to defense during his senior season and made 78 tackles and seven interceptions. That same season he was a first-team all-state selection.

On the track team, Josh Evans was arguably even more effective. Josh Evans was a key force that brough the team to a Track co-state championship title. Josh Evans sprinted the hurdles, ran a relay and high jumped.

Josh Evans chose the Florida Gators football program over offers from Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and Purdue. As a true freshman in fall 2009, Josh Evans played in 8 games and made 6 tackles. He ran on the Florida Gators track team in spring 2010--one of just a few Florida athletes to be successful at two sports.
